Plan/Agenda:
-
Introduction: Overview of the growing role of AI in freshmen composition class and its potential applications in composition pedagogy.
-
Literature Review: Analysis of existing research on AI tools in education, focusing on composition instruction and AI-related challenges.
-
Methodology: Development of strategies for incorporating AI in writing classes, balancing ethical concerns with pedagogical goals.
-
Discussion: Exploration of AI tools like ChatGPT in writing tasks, including their benefits and ethical implications.
-
Evaluation: Assessment of the effectiveness of AI integration strategies in promoting academic integrity and student writing improvement.

What I've Done:
-
Reviewed literature on AI in education and freshmen composition pedagogy.
-
Identified key challenges (e.g., academic dishonesty, over-reliance on AI) in integrating AI into writing courses.
-
Developed and tested strategies for ethical AI use in ENGL 1101 and 1102, focusing on in-class discussions and AI-assisted writing tasks.

Research Statement: This research addresses the need for effective integration of AI into freshman composition courses, focusing on solutions to ethical challenges. The dissertation proposes a framework for using AI tools responsibly in the classroom, ensuring students enhance their writing skills while maintaining academic integrity. Through strategies like awareness-building discussions and AI-assisted writing tasks, I aim to guide students in leveraging AI as a tool to improve their writing, rather than as a shortcut, fostering long-term intellectual growth and ethical academic practices.
